What Happens When Mobile Wallet Passes Expire?
Just like some coupons have an expiration date, so do digital wallet passes. But what happens after that date? Let's explore this for Apple Wallet and Google Pay.
*NOTE: Before Expiry, it's best practices is to let the user know the pass will expire before hand so make sure to schedule a push campaign to warn them.
Apple Wallet
Once Expired:
The pass gets a clear "Expired" label on it. It'll still be there in the app but moved to a less obvious spot, so it doesn't clutter things up. It won't work for its main purpose anymore, like boarding a train.
Keeping or Deleting:
The expired pass will stay in the wallet unless the person using the app decides to delete it.
Google Wallet
Once Expired:
The pass won't be front and center anymore and might move to a different section. Just like in Apple Wallet, its main functions won't work. Keep in mind this may take up to 24 hours to update on the user's phone.
Automatic Cleanup:
If a pass just sits there and isn't used for a while, Google Pay might remove it to keep things tidy.
In a Nutshell:
Expired passes don't disappear immediately but move out of the way. They're labeled clearly as "Expired", so there's no confusion. Both Apple Wallet and Google Pay do this to keep things organized and avoid clutter.
